Takmer kolmá skalnatá stena, nijako využiteľná, sa premenila na botanickú záhradu. Obyvatelia Monte Carla sú v tom majstri. Záhrada je venovaná rozsiahlej zbierke kaktusov a sukulentov. Južne orientovaná stena totiž ponúka gýčové podmienky na ich bezstarostné pestovanie.

The almost vertical rock wall, unusable, turned into a botanical garden. The inhabitants of Monte Carlo are masters. The garden is devoted to a vast collection of cacti and succulents. The south-facing wall offers ideal conditions for their carefree cultivation.

Naša cesta sa začala v decembri v meste Nice, odkiaľ sa do 20-tich minút dostanete vlakom do Monaka. Je to nádherná cesta cez tunely a pobrežie. Železnica v Monaku vedie pod mestom a tak vystupujeme v podzemnej stanici. Pred jej východom stojí autobus MHD vedúci priamo na konečnú, kde je kaktusová záhrada. Čudné je, že vodiči autobusov majú ako uniformu biely plášť. Zaujímavé :)

Our journey started in December in Nice, from where you can get to Monaco within 20 minutes. It's a wonderful way through the tunnels and the coast. The railroad in Monaco runs under the city so we get off in the underground station. In front of it, a public transport bus stops here. It leads directly to the terminus where the cactus garden is. The strange thing is that bus drivers have a white coat as a uniform. Interesting, isn't it? :)

Všade samé kaktusy Cacti everywhere

Bolo ráno a tak sme tam boli takmer prví. K lístkom sme dostali prehľadnú mapku a dostal som zľavu na ISIC. Milé. Pozerám, že vnútri sa točí nejaká reportáž, tak potichu obídeme kameramanov, vyťahujem foťák a idem na to !

It was morning and we were almost first there. With the tickets we received a clear map and a discount for me because I own student ISIC card. Nice. I see that a reportage is recording inside, so I quietly skirt the cameramen, pull out the camera and go for it!

Vidím agávy, aloe a juky obrovských rozmerov.

I see agave, aloe and yuccas in giant size.

Cestička je kľukatá a sem-tam poskytne výhľad na mesto. Monte Carlo vidno ako na dlani. Až teraz som si uvedomil, ako vysoko vlastne som.

The path is tortuous and here-and-there overlooks the city. Monte Carlo is seen as on a palm. Until now I didn't realized how high I really am.

Chodníčky sú kľukaté, ale bezbariérové, nikde žiadne schody. Vchod do záhrady je zhora, takže celý čas len zostupujem.

The walkways are crooked, but barrier-free, no stairs anywhere. The entrance to the garden is at the top, so I'm only going down all the time.

V zimnom období síce väčšina xerofytných rastlín má vegetačný pokoj, no niektoré druhy aloe bohato zakvitali.

Serpentínami postupne zchádzam nižšie a nižšie a naskytá sa pohľad smerom naspäť.

In winter, most xerophyte plants is in dormant phase, but some of the aloe species were richly blooming.

The serpentines gradually descend lower and lower and I can look backwards to the top.

Na obrázku hore vidno okrem kvitnúcej aloe aj echinokaktus v tvare pichľavej gule. Pri bližšom pohľade vidieť jeho tmavé kvety. Ľudovo sa prezýva svokrina stolička. Vieme prečo :)

Okrem toho práve rozkvitali aj tučnolisty so súkvetiami drobných bielych kvetov. Nasleduje prechádzka popod gigantické opuncie. Doslova ako z inej planéty.

In the picture above, besides the flowering aloe, echinocactus in the shape of a thorny ball can be seen. Take a closer look, and you can see its dark flowers. Its folk name is mother-in-law's chair (in Slovak language). We all know why :) Besides, Crassula bushes were also blooming producing little white flowers. Next steps leads me to a walk below the giant opuntias. Literally like from another planet.

Pri uvedomení si, že teraz sa treba vrátiť naspäť hore, som si povzdichol. Pomalým krokom smerom hore sa prepletáme bizardnými rastlinami, veď nie je kam sa ponáhľať. Pred bránami záhrady je konečná autobusu, tak nasadáme na najbližší spoj a vezieme sa až na "prízemie", k moru, do východnej časti mesta.

When I realize that now I have to go back up, I sighed. Slowly stepping up we interwove bizarre plants, there is no rush to go, though. In front of the garden gates is the terminus bus stop, so we get on head to the "ground floor", to the sea, in the eastern part of the city.

Japonská záhrada The Japanese garden

Pri mori stojí verejne prístupná (čiže zadarmo) japonská záhrada. Fenomenálne.

At the sea there is a publicly accessible (or free) Japanese garden. Phenomenal.


Cítiť tu pravého ducha japonských záhrad. Je urobená presne tak, ako sa žiada. Plochy precízne uhrabaného štrku do vĺn, solitérne skaly, tvarované borovice a jazierko s koi kaprami.

I feel the real spirit of Japanese gardens here. It's done exactly as it should be. Surfaces of well-grained gravel into the waves, solitary rocks, shaped pines and pond with koi carps.
