Vrtbovská záhrada

Predstavte si ten okamih, keď Alica nasledovala králika a objavila krajinu zázrakov.

EN: Imagine that moment when Alice followed the rabbit and discovered the wonderland. Another world, far beyond reality. Something similar I experienced when I discovered this garden in Prague. While there is literally the whole world on the streets, behind the gate is a tranquil garden full of romance. Hidden treasure right under the Prague Castle.

Pár metrov ďalej popri električkovej trati v spleti reštaurácií a obchodov so suvenírmi je nenápadná tabuľka s nápisom Vrtbovská záhrada. Vchádzam do úzkeho tmavého dvora. Na konci nachádzam kvitnúce záhony a vchod do pokladne. Absolútne žiadne náznaky toho, že niekde tu by mala byť záhrada.

Old Town Square is still full of tourists, because a way from here leads to the Charles Bridge. Few meters further along the tram route, among restaurants and souvenir shops, is a modest table with a sign Vrtba garden. I enter into the narrow dark courtyard. At the end you will find flowering beds and entrance to the cash desk. Absolutely no signs of having a garden here.

Dvor pred vstupom do pokladne.

The courtyard in front of entrance to the cash desk. The only one note what awaits a visitor is an information board.

Kupujem lístok pre dospelých za 70 Kč a do záhrady vstupujem cez akúsi bývalú kaplnku.

I bought an adult ticket for 70 czk and I entered the garden through a former chapel.

Bohato maľované stropy sú nádherné.

Richly painted ceilings are beautiful.

Zrazu uvidieť záhradu v plnej paráde. Partery so strihanými krušpánmi a tismi sú na niekoľkých úrovniach.

Suddenly I see the garden in full beauty. Parters with trimmed box and yews are on several levels.

Maľuje prírodu a kvety.

On the right is a small gallery in which the Slovak author Pavol Goča was just exhibiting. He paints nature and flowers. The color and motifs of his work reminded me of the Monet's work. Mrs. curator told me that this exhibition was prepared by the painter's family as a gift and they collected his paintings from private collections.

Ticho a pokoj, žiaden ruch mesta, jednoducho oáza.

I enjoyed the painted beauty and went off into the garden, discovering it's beauty. While there was crowd in the streets, almost no one was here. Peace and quiet, no rush of the city, just an oasis.

The parters are filled with white and pink wax begonias. Unfortunately, the box bushes have been hit by a global pest here too, in the form of mold. However, the garden was still pretty :) At the back, the stairs lead to the gallery.

I walk up the stairs and get to a higher level. Apart from the parters, I can see precisely shaped hornbeam hedges. "Windows" are cut in them, in which the benches are placed, still allowing subtle looks behind them. A perfect game enticing a visitor to discover.

Some openings are passable and in some are benches. Behind the wall is a "secret" part of the garden with perfect privacy.

V nej nerušene rastú veľkolisté bergénie, hortenzie a ruže.

There are growing broadleaved bergenias, hydrangeas and roses.

Perfect partially covered view of the garden. The masterpiece is based on a perspective. On the front there are bergenias with large bold leaves, behind them horbeam hedge with smaller leaves, and at back, small-leaved box and yews. Gradually decreasing leaf size results in a sense of depth.

Asi to bude naozaj ten osud, keď v záhradách stretávam mačičky :) Táto síce nechcela pózovať a radšej sa preplietala plotom a trelážami :)

It might be the fate when I meet cats in the gardens :) She didn't want to strike the pose and prefered to climb on the fence and trellises :)

Amazed by the place and romance I went to another floor of the garden. In back view I see paterns created by parters.

At the third level of the garden, planting is much more refined and simpler. The simple lawn is modestly edged with shaped shrubs. From here also, you can enjoy views of Hradčany and St. Nicholas Church.

This photo shows that the garden is tucked between houses in otherwise dense area of the center.

No je to bravúrne vymyslené.

Here the garden ends. Beyond the high and covered wall it seems to be nothing there. Well, it's perfectly made-up. There is an entrance leading to the stairs, which otherwise is not visible from the direct view. On steep and narrow stairs, I walk onto the top of the garden. I feel here like at the top of the tree looking at the entire Prague with the dominant features in the background. It's a unique place.

There is a parapet and a bench where I can endlessly sit :) A few people met here, but the garden was more-less empty. On the way down, I noticed a nice window at the neighboring house.

Finally, I must say that such a beautiful and refined baroque garden hidden in the center of the city is a unique phenomenon worthy of admiration. If you want to relax at least for a while, don't hesitate to visit this garden. But keep your eyes open, as from the street it is really inconspicuous. Who knows, maybe it's the intention and it should stay like this ...
