Bola polovica júla. Myslel som si, že to bude výlet na pár hodín. Bol som ja naivný. Pretiahol sa na celý deň. Areál bol totiž tak rozsiahly a tak plný inšpirácie, že jednoducho som musel vidieť všetko. Urobil som niekoľko stoviek fotografií a tak vyberám aspoň tie najviac výpovedné. Výstava sa konala v meste Almere neďaleko Amsterdamu. Na výlet som sa dobre pripravil - vopred som kúpil online vstupenky vrátane spiatočného lístku na shuttle autobus premávajúci medzi železničnou stanicou v Almere a expo areálom. Okrem toho som takto kúpil aj lístky na prímestský vlak z Amsterdamu do Almere. Bolo krásne slnečné a mierne teplé počasie. Po krátkej kontrole vstupeniek a obsahu ruksaku vstupujem dnu. Víta ma veľká mapa areálu, ktorú dostávam aj do ruky. Kam najskôr vyraziť? Do skleníkov! 

It was mid-July. I thought it would be a trip for a few hours. I was naive. It dragged on for the whole day. The area was so vast and so full of inspiration that I simply had to see everything. I took several hundred photos, so I choose at least the most expressive ones. The exhibition was held in the city of Almere near Amsterdam. I prepared well for the trip - I bought online tickets in advance, including a return ticket for the shuttle bus running between the train station in Almere and the expo area. In addition, I also bought tickets for the suburban train from Amsterdam to Almere this way. The weather was beautiful, sunny and slightly warm. After a short check of the tickets and the contents of the backpack, I enter. I am greeted by a large map of the area, which I also receive in my hand. Where to go first? To the greenhouses!

Keď som vyšiel zo skleníkov, prechádzam sa po hlavnej uličke a míňam mnoho líniových výsadieb letničiek a trvaliek. Po ceste zachádzam do rôznych záhrad ladených do konkrétnej tematiky - záhrada venovaná mestskej džungli či záhrada venovaná trvalo udržateľnému rozvoju. Tá mi vyrazila dych. Chodníky boli vyrobené z očistených broskyňových kôstok a záhony boli zamulčované lieskovými škrupinami. Ukážkový príklad využitia odpadu zo spracovania potravín. 

After exiting the greenhouses, I walk down the main path and pass many linear plantings of annuals and perennials. Along the way, I go to different gardens tuned to a specific theme - a garden dedicated to the urban jungle or a garden dedicated to sustainable development. This one took my breath away. The walkways were made of cleaned peach drupes and the flower beds were mulched with hazelnut shells. A nice example of the use of waste from food processing.

Ako kráčam ďalej, vidím ďalšie a ďalšie trvalkové výsadby všemožných štýlov. Týmto smerom sa uberá celý svet - rozmanitosť a prirodzenosť. 

As I walk on, I see more and more perennial plantings of all sorts of styles. The whole world is moving in this direction - diversity and naturalness.

Za trvalkovými záhonmi sa prezentovali niektoré šľachtiteľské firmy so svojimi výpestkami. Bolo tu vysadené samostatné rozárium s najnovšími kultivarmi. Čo je v móde? Jednoduché ruže s tmavým očkom. Sú veľmi pekné a zároveň priateľské k hmyzu. Vedľa stála ďalšia záhrada, tentokrát americkej firmy Proven Winners, ktorá patrí k tým najlepším na svete. Venuje sa šľachteniu nielen balkónových rastlín, ale aj drevinám. Bol som úplne vo vytržení.

Behind the perennial beds, some breeding companies presented their products. A separate rose garden with the latest cultivars was planted here. What's in fashion? Roses with simple flowers and dark eye. They are very pretty and at the same time insect friendly. Next to it stood another garden, this time from the American company Proven Winners, which is one of the best in the world. It is dedicated to breeding not only balcony plants, but also shrubs. I was completely ecstatic. 

Pomaly som sa dostal až na koniec južnej časti areálu. Nachádzal sa tu svah zvažujúci sa k jazeru. Na svahu boli ukážky komplexných trvalkových zmesí v rôznom dizajne. Každá zmes bola inak farebne aj štrukturálne ladená, mala aj svoju info tabuľku s vysvetlením a osadzovacím plánom. Niektoré boli tak nádherné a dokonalé, aké som doteraz poznal iba z odborných kníh. 

I slowly reached the end of the southern part of the area. There was a hillside sloping down to the lake. On the slope there were examples of complex perennial mixtures in various designs. Each mixture was different in color and structure, and had its own info board with an explanation and planting plan. Some were so beautiful and perfect that I only knew them from professional books.

Od trvalkových zmesí sa vraciam k administratívnej budove, v ktorej som si dal ľahký obed. Pred budovou je veľké námestie určené na kultúrne programy prebiehajúce len v určitých dňoch. Stojí tu symbol tejto expo výstavy - dvojica rodič a dieťa z corten ocele. Sochy sú vyskladané z menších dielov v tvare včely. Tak ako je rodina a súdržnosť dôležitá, tak je dôležitá aj kvalita životného prostredia symbolizovaná včelami. Corten je v posledných rokoch veľmi používaným materiálom v záhradnej architektúre a niet sa čomu diviť. Prirodzeným zhrdzavením povrchu dôjde k vytvoreniu ochrannej vrstvy a oceľ nevyžaduje žiadnu starostlivosť.  

From the perennial mixtures, I return to the office building where I had a light lunch. In front of the building there is a large square intended for cultural programs taking place only on certain days. The symbol of this expo stands here - a pair of parent and child made of corten steel. The sculptures are assembled from smaller parts in the shape of a bee. Just as family and cohesion are important, so is the quality of the environment symbolized by bees. Corten has been a widely used material in garden architecture in recent years, and it's no wonder. The natural rusting of the surface creates a protective layer and the steel does not require any maintenance.

Cez most kráčam do sektoru, v ktorom sú záhrady prezentujúce alternatívne spôsoby hospodárenia, vedecké výskumy, nové postupy a materiály. Urban Climate Arboreta projekt sa venoval výskumu stromov v mestskom prostredí - ako prežívajú v podmienkach ulíc počas klimatickej zmeny a období sucha.  Niektoré záhrady prezentovali novodobé minimalistické a nízko uhlíkové spôsoby bývania; alternatívne formy výučby; závlahové systémy; využitie ovocných drevín v mestách; umenie v záhrade; zelené steny či hmyzu priateľské záhrady. Nekonečné množstvo inšpirácie a vedomostí. 

I walk across the bridge to a sector where there are gardens presenting alternative farming methods, scientific research, new processes and materials. The Urban Climate Arboreta project was devoted to the research of trees in the urban environment - how they survive in street conditions during climate change and periods of drought. Some gardens presented modern minimalist and low-carbon ways of living; alternative forms of teaching; irrigation systems; use of fruit trees in cities; art in the garden; green walls or insect-friendly gardens. An endless amount of inspiration and knowledge.

To množstvo inovácií a rastlín, ktoré som doteraz videl, už bolo dosť ohromujúce, ba priam až mentálne vyčerpávajúce. No zjavil sa trvalkový záhon. Tak dokonalý, bezchybný, výnimočne kvitnúci, že som ostal dojatý a plný emócií. To, čo som doteraz videl iba v knihách a televízii, zrazu stojím uprostred a neviem sa vynadívať. Záhon bol rozdelený do dvoch častí - farebne studený a teplý. Pomedzi záhony viedli úzke chodníky a všetky druhy boli vysoké až na úroveň človeka. Umožňovali priamu interakciu s touto živou krásou. 

The amount of innovation and plants I have seen so far has already been quite overwhelming, even mentally exhausting. But a perennial bed appeared. So perfect, flawless, exceptionally blooming that I was full of emotions. What I have seen so far only in books and on television, suddenly I am standing in the middle and I can't help myself. The flower bed was divided into two parts - cold and hot colored. There were narrow paths between the beds, and all the plants were as tall as a man. They allowed direct interaction with this living beauty.

Akoby toho nebolo málo, záhrady plné moderného umenia boli zdrojom fantázie. Pre niekoho pekné, pre iného čudné. V každom prípade nezabudnuteľné. Záhrada s oceľovými trubkami inšpirovaná maliarom Van Goghom; mozaiky v organických tvaroch; prezentácia fľašiek s farebnými extraktmi rastlín alebo záhony prezentujúce iba jeden druh či rod. 

As if that wasn't enough, the gardens filled with modern art were a source of imagination. Nice for some, strange for others. Unforgettable in any case. A garden with steel pipes inspired by the painter Van Gogh; mosaics in organic shapes; presentation of bottles with colored plant extracts or beds presenting only one species or genus. 

Toľko podnetov si vyžadovalo pauzu. Našťastie na viacerých miestach sú pavilóny ponúkajúce občerstvenie. Tu som si oddýchol, aby som pokračoval ďalej. Dostal som sa až do severnej časti areálu, ktorá bola koncipovaná menej formálne, miestami až divoko. Objavujem ukážky permakultúrnych záhrad a využitia vŕbových prútov. Zaujala ma školská záhrada dizajnovaná ako neformálny zelený amfiteáter s jazierkom. No a z hľadiska čo najšetrnejšieho spôsobu hospodárenia tu bol samostatný areál na tému agrolesníctvo. Ako je možné pestovať plodiny (zeleninu a ovocie) a hospodársky významné dreviny na jednom mieste. Takéto pestovanie využíva plochu na maximum a pritom rešpektuje biodiverzitu. Úspech totiž tkvie v rozmanitosti.    

So many stimuli required a pause. Fortunately, there are pavilions offering refreshments in several places. I rested here to continue on. I got to the northern part of the complex, which was designed less formally, sometimes even wildly. I discover examples of permaculture gardens and the use of willow rods. I was impressed by the school garden designed as an informal green amphitheater with a pond. Well, from the point of view of the most economical way of farming, there was a separate area on the subject of agroforestry. How is it possible to grow crops (vegetables and fruits) and economically important trees in one place. Such cultivation uses the plot to the maximum while respecting biodiversity. Success lies in diversity.

Na niektorých fotkách ste si mohli všimnúť kabínkovú lanovku. Tá spája severný cíp s južným a jedna jazda je v cene vstupenky. No nevyuži to. Južná časť areálu pokračuje za diaľnicou pretínajúcou toto expo a najjednoduchší spôsob, ako si ušetriť ďalšiu chôdzu, bola lanovka. Z nej sa naskytol pohľad na celý areál a až teraz som si uvedomil, aký veľký je tento areál. Okná kabínky však boli zalepené zvonku nepriehľadnou fóliou a tak fotky nie sú práve najlepšie. 

In some photos, you could notice the cable car. It connects the northern tip with the southern one, and one ride is included in the ticket price. The southern part of the site continues beyond the highway crossing this expo, and the easiest way to save yourself another walk was the cable car. From it there was a view of the entire area, and only now did I realize how big this area is. However, the windows of the cabin were sealed from the outside with an opaque foil, so the photos are not the best.

Južný cíp areálu je úzky pás zelene popri diaľnici. Tá bola schovaná za zeleným valom, takže vôbec nerušila. Na veľkých plochách boli prezentované rôzne lúčne zmesi jednoročných rastlín. 

The southern tip of the area is a narrow strip of greenery next to the highway. It was hidden behind a green rampart, so it didn't disturb at all. Various meadow mixtures of annual plants were presented on large areas.

Na konci prechádzam cez most ponad diaľnicu a prichádzam na začiatok areálu ku vstupnej bráne. Vynechal som ešte jednu časť. A tou boli záhrady jednotlivých štátov, ktoré sa sem prišli ukázať. Bolo ich oveľa menej ako pri svetových expo výstavách, kde sa štáty prezentujú v stánkoch. Medzi týmito záhradami bol pavilón prezentujúci nové využitie eko materiálov. Videli ste už podlahu vyrobenú zo semienok kvetín a zeleniny? Alebo budovu s vegetačnou stenou, v ktorej rástli aj dreviny? Pokiaľ ide o krajiny, najkrajšie záhrady mali Francúzsko, Čína a Thajsko. Aspoň podľa môjho vkusu.
At the end, I cross the bridge over the highway and arrive at the beginning of the complex at the entrance gate. I left out one more part. And that was the gardens of individual countries that came here to show themselves. There were much fewer of them than at world expo exhibitions, where countries are presented in stands. Among these gardens was a pavilion presenting a new use of eco-materials. Have you ever seen a floor made of flower and vegetable seeds? Or a building with a vegetation facade in which shrubs also grew? In terms of countries, France, China and Thailand had the most beautiful gardens. At least to my taste.

Bol to jedinečný zážitok a na konci výletu som ostal vyčerpaný. Na toto budem dlho spomínať a získanú inšpiráciu využívať ešte nasledujúce roky. Ďalší ročník sa koná v roku 2032 a už teraz sa neviem dočkať. Aj keď nemáte vzťah ku záhrade alebo pestovaniu, takúto rozsiahlu výstavu sa jednoducho oplatí vidieť - rozšíri vám obzory. 

It was a unique experience and I was exhausted at the end of the trip. I will remember this for a long time and use the inspiration I received for years to come. The next expo is in 2032 and I can't wait. Even if you have no connection to the garden or cultivation, such an extensive exhibition is simply worth seeing - it will broaden your minds.
