Botanická záhrada Elte Füvészkert, Budapešť

Prvá a najstaršia botanická záhrada v Maďarsku bola založená už v 18. storočí. Navštívil som ju koncom novembra a preto som nemohol objaviť jej všetky krásy.

The first and oldest botanical garden in Hungary was founded in the 18th century. I visited it at the end of November and therefore I could not discover all its beauties.

Access to the botanical garden is easy. Just take the metro or bus to the Semmelweis Klinikák stop and from there it's a few minutes' walk around the hospital grounds along Korányi Sándor Street. I enter the area through a courtyard spread between several older office buildings. During the season, there are obviously annual plantings and container plants are displayed. I bought a ticket in a small booth and looked at the map on the big board. I quickly find out that most of the information boards are only in Hungarian.

Mapa areálu/ The map of area

Info tabuľami sú označené významné stromy. Najprv prechádzam cez živú botanickú učebnicu - pravidelné záhony rozdelené do čeľadí.

Important trees are marked with info boards. First, I go through a living botanical textbook - regular beds divided according to plant families. On the table there is a map with the occurrence of the given family in the world, the flower pattern and important species representing the family grow in the flower bed. Sometimes it's incredible how different species can be within the same family. A complex of greenhouses appeared in front of me, but it was closed at that time. I only looked inside through the window. One of the greenhouses boasts a pond with Victoria amazonica.

Skleníky/ The greenhouses

Skleníky obchádzam dookola a míňam malú skalku s mrazuvzdornými opunciami a jukami, cudzokrajné ihličnany a malý figový sad. V lete to tu musí pripomínať dovolenku.
I walk around the greenhouses and pass a small rock garden with hardy opuntias and yuccas, exotic conifers and a small fig orchard. Behind the greenhouses is a small pond in a regular rectangular shape framed by decking boards and deck chairs. In the summer, it must be like a vacation here.

Vegetácia okolo skleníkov/ Greenery around the greenhouses

Vegetácia hustne a dostávam sa do časti areálu s množstvom stromov a na moje prekvapenie objavuje palmový pavilón vo viktoriánskom štýle. Veľká a veľmi pekná stavba.

The vegetation thickens and I reach a part of the grounds with lots of trees and to my surprise I see a Victorian style palm pavilion. A large and very nice building. It is built on the north-eastern side of the area and thus forms a leeward side for more sensitive species. Various delicate trees such as evergreen magnolia, aucuba, osmanthus, photinia, hardy Chusan palms and Japanese banana trees are planted along the pavilion. But what took my breath away were the sturdy date palms wrapped in foil from the frost and such pieces as hardy oleander, fatsia, edgewortia and Japanese loquat! We grow these species exclusively indoors in the winter.

Krásne a majestátne jedince.

I felt like I was in the jungle in the palm pavilion. Beautiful and majestic individuals. The Arenga obtusifolia palm caught my attention immediately upon entering. It resembles a date palm, but is much larger. Definitely one of the biggest palm trees I've seen. It forms such massive and large leaves several meters long that it looked like a creature from another world. I also discover other palm trees, banana trees and common tropical (house) plants. Containered species such Chinese hibiscus were stored on the sidewalks.

In front of the palm pavilion is a herb garden in the shape of a parterre, and around it is a more relaxed planting of lagerstroemias. In addition, there are a few distinctive conifers, especially the hardy monkey puzzle tree (araucaria) and the cunninghamia. Araucarias are my favorite and I am always delighted to discover them. From the herb garden, I head to the opposite end. There is a small example of a Japanese garden with a pond and a bamboo grove. Behind the garden is a smaller historic office building with a small seating area under a pergola.

From this place, the path led back to the entrance courtyard through a wooded area. Ancient conifers such as metasequoias and two-hundred-year-old ginkgos grew here, shade-loving perennials, ferns and evergreen shrubs grew below them. The terrain was shaped into small rockeries, but in this environment they were covered with moss and low vegetation. A bit like an enchanted landscape. I found a collection of cultivars of english laurel, aucuba and here and there dwarf conifers.

Based on my knowledge, I can imagine what this garden looks like in the summer and how beautifully it can be in full bloom. Despite the fact that it was already after the season, there was much to admire. I will definitely come back here to see it in full bloom.
